Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate
Selected Card Concepts from Magic: the Gathering’s Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate, produced while working with Wizards of the Coast.
Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate features a multitude of legendary characters designed for the Commander format, and draws inspiration from Dungeons & Dragons’ Forgotten Realms setting, especially the port city of Baldur’s Gate. This project overlapped with the beta testing and creation of the JRPG Baldur’s Gate 3—I referenced all three Baldur’s Gate games and countless D&D modules, adventures, and sourcebooks in creating a detailed and accurate setting.

Lightning Bolt
A classic spell for both D&D and Magic, translated into two very different styles with different concepts. The Rulebook frame art is designed to look like classic artwork from the 1st-edition D&D sourcebooks, while the Main Set art depicts Wyrm’s Crossing, a landmark in the city of Baldur’s Gate, as well as a fairly literal visual interpretation of the D&D spell. Art by Irina Nordsol and Phil Stone.

Bountiful Promenade
This was one of the first pieces I commissioned for the set, and I used the buildings here (inspired by castles in Lisbon) as architectural style reference for many other pieces featuring the Upper City (the wealthy central district) of Baldur’s Gate. This mansion in particular is my take on the exterior of Vanthampur Villa from Descent into Avernus. Art by Alayna Danner.
-
Fireball
Similar to Lightning Bolt, this is a classic spell in both games, with the D&D spell being perhaps the most iconic of destructive magics. Both pieces feature a companion character from the Larian Baldur’s Gate 3 game and were concepted to highlight the destructiveness and power of the spell. Art by Xavier Ribeiro and Justine Jones.

Minsc and Boo, Timeless Heroes
Early in the set’s design, there was a lot of discussion about who the planeswalkers of the set would be—planeswalkers are Magic’s protagonists and are characters frequently used to promote and sell the set. I strongly advocated for Minsc and Boo, because of the timely release of an associated D&D product, and because hamsters are cute. I also pitched an early version of this card’s mechanical design. Art by Andreas Zafiratos and Bram Sels.

Wand of Wonder
An iconic D&D magic item—I’ve faithfully replicated two red-aligned effects of the Wand of Wonder from the 5th edition Dungeon Masters’ Guide in my concepts, and encouraged both artists to add magical flair to their work. Art by Xavier Ribeiro and Lindsey Look.
